"Cultures teach us the stories by which we live, but they do not tell us what stories are. How could we begin to comperehend the first stories that we hear, unless we already have an understanding of heroes and villains, right and wrong, good and bad, aims and obstacles, collaboration and conflict, power and prohibition, causes and consequences? We do not have specific foreknowledge of the elements of the particular culture that we embrace; cultures themselves teach us who the heroes and villains will be, and what is good and what is bad. But we must have the prior structures, the questions, to which our cultures and our experience provide the detailed answers." (Frank Smith)
