Clara's Children's Literature Web Site

Welcome!

Hi, my name is Clara B. Morris. I am a Native American; a Navajo woman of 44 who is interested in children's literature. There are many authors, stories, and illustrators whom I consider as my forvorites, but here, I will include a few.

My favorite book is the "Orphan Train." I was introduced to this story by a gifted teacher at the school where I work. The story had the children interested in the all the elements of the story: setting, characters, and events.

One of my favorite author is Joan Lowery Nixon. I like the way she is sensitive to the audience of all ages. In the books of the "Orphan Trains," she includes the entire family's situation, and the historical event  to bring to life the children's situation about why the train come alive. There are sequels to the original story that tells about the individual lives of the five children.

I have picked two illustrators because of the importance of bilingual education in considering Native American and  Western Culture.
  • Shonto Begay, is a poet who brings to life the real essence of a traditional native home, and environment. When reading his books, and poems; I am set back to my own family home and I feel,  I sense, and I can taste the settings.
  • Another of my favorite illustrators is Jan Brett. Jan brings colors into her books. She places small animals, and fills the entire page so a child is curious to find what is on the entire page. One of her books, " Christmas Treasury"  has been one of my classroom's favorite.

My all time fovirte stories that I grew up with was by Hans Christain Anderson. He covers many situations around different events areas in a childs life. At first, I was attracted to the name, and that is how I first got interested in his books. Any one can read his books. There are no limitations on the interest or age level because there are so many to choose from.

Sunny Dooley, depicts the lifestyle, myths, and tradition as a Navajo woman. Her stories come alive through her dramatic portrayal.

Did You Know?

I perform for children, although most of my work is in the making, or being revised.  I love to sing. One of my stories is about a little girl who is interested in birds, and as she grows she listens to the birds and their individual songs. She finds a song for herself to sing to the birds when she becomes a young lady. I love to perform.
